An unusually quiet day for Maigret is disturbed by a visit from mild-mannered toy salesman, Xavier Manton. Maigret is puzzled by Manton’s admission that he suspects his wife of plotting to poison him and when he receives a visit from Mme Manton later that day he is not sure who to trust. Maigret heeds the advice of his seniors and investigates the couple and when a body is discovered everyone, including Maigret, is surprised.
Xavier Manto, a mild-mannered toy salesman from a Paris department store, has come to confide his secret fears to Inspector Maigret: he suspects his wife is plotting to poison him. Then when Maigret receives a visit from Madame Manton on the same day, he is not sure who to trust. Soon he becomes caught up in a treacherous feud between husband and wife, where nothing is as clear cut as it seems.
