Upcoming Events at Jaffe & Neale Chipping Norton

Thursday 21st September at 6pm, book launch with Nell Darby

Nell Will be here in the shop to celebrate the launch of her new book, Life on the Victorian Stage: Theatrical Gossip.

“The expansion of the press in Victorian Britain meant more pages to be filled, and more stories to be found. Life on the Victorian Stage: Theatrical Gossip looks at how the everyday lives of Victorian performers and managers were used for such a purpose, with the British newspapers covering the good, the bad and the ugly side of life on the stage during the nineteenth century. Viewed through the prism of Victorian newspapers, and in particular through their gossip columns, this book looks at the perils facing actors from financial disasters or insecurity to stalking, from libel cases to criminal trials and offers an alternative view of the Victorian theatrical profession.”

The event will not be ticketed and is free to attend. We look forward to seeing you.

Wednesday 18th October, an evening with Rosamund Young, author of The Secret Life of Cows

“Cows are as varied as people. They can be highly intelligent or slow to understand, vain, considerate, proud, shy or inventive.Although much of a cow’s day is spent eating, they always find time for extra-curricular activities such as babysitting, playing hide and seek, blackberry-picking or fighting a tree. This is an affectionate record of a hitherto secret world.”

Rosamund will be joining us in the shop to talk about her work, as well as her book, The Secret Life of Cows. The time is still to be determined, so keep an eye of the website, or ask in store for more information closer to the time.

Jaffé & Neale Stow, Book Club

Tuesday, 21st March 2017, 6.45-7.45pm

Amy & Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout

In her stunning first novel Elizabeth Strout evokes a teenager’s alienation from her distant mother—and a parent’s rage at the discovery of her daughter’s sexual secrets. In most ways, Isabelle and Amy are like any mother and her 16-year-old daughter, a fierce mix of love and loathing exchanged in their every glance. That they eat, sleep, and work side by side in the gossip-ridden mill town of Shirley Falls only increases the tension. And just when it appears things can’t get any worse, Amy’s sexuality begins to unfold, causing a vast and icy rift between mother and daughter that will remain unbridgeable unless Isabelle examines her own secretive and shameful past.

10% discount for all Book Club books bought at Jaffé & Neale.

Enquiries: e:        t: 01451 832000
